Photographing jewellery presents a range of technical challenges, images must meet high standards for e-commerce, luxury brands, and online retail. One of the biggest difficulties is managing reflections and glare. Polished metals such as gold, silver, and platinum, along with faceted gemstones, reflect light intensely, making lighting for jewellery photography critical. Poor lighting can result in distracting reflections, loss of detail, or dull-looking stones.
Achieving sharp focus is another common issue in macro jewellery photography. Jewellery pieces are small, so you need to move in close which creates a shallow depth of field, detailed and often three-dimensional. Ensuring every element—from prongs to gemstones—is in focus often requires precise camera alignment and focus stacking techniques.
Lighting must be used to enhance the sparkle while preserving texture and shape. Incorrect lighting angles can flatten the piece or overpower gemstones, reducing their brilliance. Balancing sparkle and clarity is essential for high-quality images.
Dust, scratches, and fingerprints are constant concerns. At high magnification, even microscopic flaws become visible, requiring meticulous cleaning and careful handling throughout the shoot or removing in post production.
Finally, accurate colour representation is essential in jewellery product photography, as customers rely on images to judge quality and value. Consistent, realistic images help build trust, improve conversion rates, and support strong online sales.
